The three types

The three types — Steel Bollards: Fixed, Decorative, and Removable
TypeWhat it isUse it when
Standard steelPipe bollard, concrete filled, embedded in a footing, painted or galvanized, often with a sleeve coverProtecting columns, equipment, gas meters, panels, dock corners, and building faces from vehicle impact
DecorativeArchitectural bollard with a designed profile, cap, or finish, sometimes with lightingStorefronts, plazas, entries, and anywhere the protection has to look intentional
Removable or lockingBollard that lifts out of or folds into a ground sleeve, with a lockFire lanes, controlled access drives, loading areas, and event closures where the barrier is temporary

The pipe is not the bollard. The footing is.

A bollard stops a vehicle by transferring the impact into the ground. That work is done by the concrete below grade, not the steel above it.

Which is why a bollard set in 12 inches of concrete will lie flat the first time a delivery truck backs into it, and a properly designed one will damage the truck instead. Same pipe. Different footing.

The full detail

That distinction matters most for the thing you are protecting. If the bollard is in front of a building column, a gas meter, an electrical service, or a mezzanine column, the whole point is that the bollard fails before the thing behind it does. A decorative bollard that looks correct and is set in a shallow pour provides the appearance of protection and none of the function.

We size the footing to the application and tell you when the site conditions will not support what you are asking for.

  • Welder striking an arc on a steel section at a shop bench, the weld pool lighting the table and the hood while the shop behind stays dark.

What we need to quote bollards

  • Quantity
  • Type: standard, decorative, or removable
  • Height above grade and diameter, if specified
  • What is being protected, and from what kind of vehicle
  • Surface: existing concrete, asphalt, dirt, or new pour
  • Whether existing paving can be cut, or whether a surface-mounted base plate is required
  • Interior or exterior
  • Finish: painted, galvanized, powder coated, or a sleeve cover
  • Whether any of them need to be removable, and who controls the key
  • Photos of the location

Installation methods

Installation methods — Steel Bollards: Fixed, Decorative, and Removable
MethodNotes
Embedded, new footingCore or excavate, set, and pour. The strongest arrangement
Embedded, existing slabCore drill through the slab and pour a footing below
Surface-mounted base plateAnchored to the existing slab. Faster and less disruptive, but lower impact capacity. Depends entirely on the slab
Ground sleeve, removableSleeve set in the pour, bollard lifts out and locks

Surface-mount is popular because it is quick. It is also the arrangement most likely to disappoint under a real impact, because the capacity is limited by the existing slab and its anchors. We will tell you when the application needs an embedded footing.

Common questions

How much does a steel bollard cost?

Standard steel bollards run $450 – $850 each, decorative bollards run $950 – $2,500 each, and removable or locking bollards run $1,500 – $3,500 each, in 2026 Northern California, fabrication only. Installation is quoted after a site visit because core drilling, footing excavation, and working around existing utilities vary enormously by site.

Why do prices go down per bollard on a larger order?

Setup, mobilization, and finishing amortize across the quantity. Twelve identical bollards fabricated and installed in one trip cost meaningfully less each than three. If you have a phased plan, tell us the total quantity and we will quote it as one project with staged delivery.

Do you install, or do we need our own contractor?

We install within 600 miles of Sacramento, and installation is quoted after a site visit and field review. Bollard installation almost always involves cutting or coring existing paving and working near buried utilities, which is exactly why we look at it before pricing it.

What size bollard do we need?

It depends on what you are protecting and from what. A bollard protecting a gas meter from a passenger car in a parking lot and a bollard protecting a mezzanine column from a loaded forklift are different products with different footings. Tell us what is behind it and what drives near it.

Can you install bollards without cutting our concrete?

Surface-mounted base plate bollards anchor to existing slab without coring a footing. They are faster and much less disruptive, and they have lower impact capacity, limited by the slab and the anchors. That trade-off is fine for low-speed protection and not fine in front of a structural column. We will say which applies.

Do you do decorative or lighted bollards?

Decorative bollards are a published product at $950 – $2,500 each. Lighted bollards involve an electrical scope that is coordinated rather than self-performed.

Tell us the count and what you are protecting

Plus a photo of the surface, so we know whether we are coring, cutting, or anchoring.
