DIVISION 03 · ENCLOSURES · BUILD + INSTALL 600 MI

Specialized Industrial Enclosures

Separate the process from the plant, or protect the plant from the process. We design, build, and install the room around it.

Process enclosures, hazardous-area enclosures, food and pharmaceutical enclosures, equipment and utility enclosures, and manufacturing support structures. Design nationwide, build and install within 600 miles of Sacramento.

A process that needs its own room usually needs it yesterday

Enclosure projects almost never start as enclosure projects. They start as a finding.

An insurer flags a solvent operation running in open plant air. A customer audit says the packaging line needs environmental separation from the raw side. A new treatment step introduces dust that the rest of the building cannot tolerate. An engineer runs the numbers on a deflagration risk and the answer is that this operation needs to be in a room with a defined relief path.

The full detail

Agitate: Now you are sourcing a project that does not fit any normal contractor. A general contractor builds rooms out of studs and drywall and has no idea what a relief panel does. A machine shop can weld a frame but has never coordinated a fire-rated penetration. An HVAC contractor will size the make-up air and hand you the rest of the scope back. Meanwhile the finding has a date on it.

And an enclosure is not a box. It is structure, envelope, ventilation, penetrations, access, lighting, drainage, containment, and the door hardware, and every one of those has to be coordinated with the equipment going inside it and the plant it is bolted to.

Solution: We build the enclosure and everything that passes through it. Structure, panels, doors, ventilation, utility penetrations, containment, and access platforms, coordinated with the process equipment because we install that too.

Enclosure types

  • Process Enclosures

Rooms built around a process step to control temperature, humidity, air quality, cleanliness, or noise. Seed priming rooms, coating and treatment rooms, controlled-environment production cells.

  • Hazardous Area Enclosures

Explosion rooms and enclosures for operations with combustible dust, solvent vapor, or other hazardous atmospheres. Built to the classification and relief strategy the project's engineering defines.

  • Food and Pharmaceutical Enclosures

Washdown-rated, sanitary-detail enclosures with smooth surfaces, minimal debris traps, corrosion-resistant materials, and drainage designed in. Built to food-grade design expectations.

  • Equipment and Utility Enclosures

Weather, security, acoustic, and access protection for equipment: compressors, generators, pumps, chillers, dust collectors, and control panels. Indoor and outdoor.

  • Manufacturing Support Structures

The structures a process needs but nobody budgeted: mezzanines over the enclosure, service platforms, pipe supports, catwalks, and the access system to reach it all.

That third row is a defined service line. If your process engineer or insurer already specified the enclosure and you need somebody competent to build it, that is a normal job for us.

What we ask before quoting an enclosure

  • What goes in it, and what does that equipment give off
  • Air changes required, and where the make-up air comes from
  • Cleaning regime: dry wipe, washdown, caustic, steam
  • Classification, if any, and who made that determination
  • What penetrates the envelope, and at what pressure and temperature
  • Access requirements: how equipment gets in and out for service
  • Whether it is inside a building, on a roof, or outdoors
  • Whether the floor can carry it, or whether we are also building the structure under it

Common questions

What is an explosion room?

It is a hazardous-area enclosure built to contain and safely relieve a deflagration event, so that an incident inside the room does not become an incident inside the plant. The design is driven by the hazard analysis: the material, the dust or vapor characteristics, the volume, and the relief strategy that the project's process safety engineering defines. M3E fabricates and installs these enclosures to the design criteria the project establishes.

Do you handle the ventilation, or just the room?

Both. Air and environmental systems are a defined part of our utility tie-ins scope, and dust collection and air handling systems appear throughout our project portfolio. Building the envelope and handing off the air is how enclosure projects turn into finger-pointing later. We would rather own both sides of that connection.

Can you build a washdown-rated enclosure for food production?

Yes. Food and pharmaceutical enclosures are a defined enclosure type. The design considerations are the same ones we apply to sanitary equipment: smooth surfaces, minimal debris traps, corrosion-resistant materials, drainage designed in rather than added, and construction that survives your actual cleaning chemistry. Tell us your sanitation SOP, including chemistry, temperature, and pressure, and we will detail to it.

How long does an enclosure project take?

The engineering and approval phase usually takes longer than the build. Classification determinations, insurer review, and permit review are the long poles, and they are largely outside our control. The fabrication and installation window is compressed by prefabricating panels and frames in the shop and assembling on site. Ask for a schedule at quote and we will separate the parts we control from the parts we do not.

Can you build it while the plant runs?

Usually yes for the enclosure itself, with the tie-ins scheduled into a defined window. Enclosure construction is often less disruptive than the equipment installation that follows it, which is one reason we sequence both together. Prefabrication, containment for hot work, and dust control during construction are standard.

Do you build outdoor equipment enclosures too?

Yes. Generator, mechanical, compressor, and chiller enclosures, indoor or outdoor. Commercial-grade versions of these have published 2026 budget pricing: mechanical and generator enclosures run $8,000 – $25,000 and up, fabrication only. See enclosures pricing. Industrial process and hazardous-area enclosures are quoted individually.

Tell us what goes in the room and what it gives off

Those two answers drive the classification, the air, the envelope, and the price.
